Jabberwocky for Halloween

This comes just in time for Halloween: Jabberwocky Variation: Jabbercandy. If you want the original, I found it here: Jabberwocky and here are Jabberwocky Explanations and Origins. And here are More Jabberwocky Variations and Parodies. I told it to Nathaniel but he just wanted to throw my slippers over the bannister.

I’m all for capitalism, but…

CNN.com - Fight over Wal-Mart at Mexico ruins - Sep 11, 2004

Do they have to put one EVERYWHERE? And this quote is priceless:

“I support the store, it will save me time and money,” said Camilo Olivas, a father of four who works for the federal electricity commission in Teotihuacan.

He drives 10 minutes every two weeks to shop at a Wal-Mart store in another town to find low prices.

Hear Your Food

LONDON: He has given the world bacon and egg ice cream, snail porridge and a mousse “poached” in liquid nitrogen. Now one of Britain’s leading chefs is to provide his diners with a way of hearing their eating experience. Full Story.

Side note: Apparently, according to this article, Restaurant Magazine named French Laundry #1 restaurant in the world. Impressive! (although how swayed are they by popularity?) Even though Maggie’s stomach did somersaults when she saw the bill when she and I went there, it’s still cool to have eaten there. And thanks Dad and Mom for taking us!

Daily Drama

Seems like there’s always something stirring up the pot… This morning the very kind and friendly neighbors called to say they may have their house available for a family to house-sit on the off-season, just pay utilities and get out of the house if they visit, and she knew there are 3 families living here. Only thing is, there’s another couple (with two children) who did it last year who would be coming over in a few hours to discuss it. The other couple was fine, but they thought of giving us preference.

So we spent a few edgy hours hashing and re-hashing what-ifs, and who might go over there, and what kind of upheaval it would cause. In the end, they gave the house to the couple because they were counting on it more than the homeowners realized.

Sometimes it’s easier not to have too many choices. Maybe next year.

Congrats to Liz

Liz just got a new job with the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) in Yarmouth Port, MA (MAP). They even agreed to a part-time/ flexible schedule when Liz proposed it. This way she can be around to take kids to CCD and soccer practice and other activities in the afternoons.

Nathaniel update

I couldn’t stand another oddity being at the top of the page so here’s a quick Nathaniel update.

  • He likes tomatoes at least as much as bananas now.
  • He is cutting a molar, top left, so he compains or cries easily these days.
  • A couple days ago he walked across the room by himself, and almost every day does about 10 steps. He can stop and keep his balance and keep going. He still needs encouragement and sometimes he just won’t.
  • The doctor says to say as many words in as many languages as you can because he is soaking it all up right now. The more languages he hears the better, but children who hear a lot of languages may take longer to speak. I assume it’s because they have to sort it all out.
  • On the changing table he was playing with a bottle with a nipple on it, with just water in it. He squirted himself with it and laughed out loud. So of course he did it over and over again and we all laughed for quite a while. Then changed his soaking outfit.

Ice Cream Recipes

I just finished one of Jeffrey Steingarten’s (of The Man Who Ate Everything Fame) food articles from Vogue. He gets a variety of ice cream makers and endeavors to create the ultimate soft-serve. At the end of the article, he devotes a lot of words to praise for Meredith Kurtzman, a pastry chef who started at Mario Battali’s Esca and is now at Otto, making handmade authentic Italian gelati. They made available several of the mouth-watering recipes at a site called eGullet of all things: Meredith Kurtzman’s Gelato and Sorbet Recipes. I think I’ll have to make a point of going next time we’re in New York.
