Differences in old and new versions of “The Best Word Book Ever”

Richard Scarry’s Best Word Book Ever - Changes

Someone documented and annotated the differences between old and new versions of Scarry’s book. Very interesting. The illustrations have changed in addition to the words, and it does seem more politically correct now. Or, maybe just updated for today’s realities, take your pick. The annotations are a great use of Flickr–be sure to roll your mouse over the pictures to see the notes.

In more than one of them, “Father gets inserted into the kitchen.”

Innovative Dive Slate: This would be great for jotting down ideas in the shower… Makes a great stocking stuffer…

Migraine Device Promises To Zap Away Headaches

Migraine Device Promises To Zap Away Headaches
It looks like a giant hair dryer, but the Transcranial Magnetic Simulator — or TMS — is actually the latest treatment being tested for migraines.”By creating a magnetic field with this device, we’re hoping that this will interrupt the electrical stimulation before it leads to the throbbing migraine headache,” said the device’s creator, a neurologist.

Hey Mom, just what you’ve been waiting for. Now you can trade in your 3×5 index cards for this online tool. It does say you can make your own comments about each book.

Rating the weather forecasters

I’ve wanted a site like this for a long time now. Weather Report Card collects data from various forecasters daily, analyzes their predictions, then tells you for a given area which service to trust. Smartly, it also tells you which to trust for specific forecasts: Today, Tomorrow, 3-day, 4-day, and 5-day. Here’s Boston weather forecast, San Francisco weather forecast, Los Angeles weather forecast, and Austin weather forecast.

Cool Hunting

A great blog for funky new stuff. I found the Sushi USB drives here a few months ago. Here’s another one that is a bug.

Just in case you wanted to see what Pinot Noir would be like in Jelly Bellies…

Wine X Magazine: Combine these flavors to get Pinot Noir

From today’s DailyCandy.com email: Belly Up

Reminds me of that wine-tasting kit you can get with 30+ scents in it, that you smell and compare to your wine, to help you identify the flavors in the wine. But this is much more approachable and less wine-geeky.

Blood Orange Jam

Wow, they have Le Pain Quotidien in the US! Maggie and I stayed near one in Paris, on Rue Mouffetard, and we got some jam there that we’ve been trying to duplicate ever since. Well, it was called “orange sanguine” and I believe it’s blood orange. So, can you check out their locations and find it? Much appreciated…

Defrost your windshield

Now this one is totally stolen from the last site, but it is too good to forget… Unless you live in California, that is.

If you live in a cold area you may sometimes walk out to your car to find the windshield completely frozen over. Rather than scraping away at it you could just start you car, urn the window defroster on, and — here’s the trick — put down the sun visors. The warm air will be forced back onto the inside of the windshield and it will defrost much faster.

I’m all for capitalism, but…

CNN.com - Fight over Wal-Mart at Mexico ruins - Sep 11, 2004

Do they have to put one EVERYWHERE? And this quote is priceless:

“I support the store, it will save me time and money,” said Camilo Olivas, a father of four who works for the federal electricity commission in Teotihuacan.

He drives 10 minutes every two weeks to shop at a Wal-Mart store in another town to find low prices.
